83 an hour The Library Assistant reports to the Library director and helps with all aspects of providing library services to Academy faculty, students and staff; to Summer Program participants; and to visitors to the library.

83/hr SCHEDULE:
Evening Shifts (4pm - 9pm or 10pm), Emergency Coverage ESSENTIAL DUTIES (examples) Welcome all library visitors and offer an orientation to the space.
Assist Academy students and faculty with locating and borrowing library materials; provide reference assistance to faculty with class projects; perform bibliographic searches; assist with the operation of copiers, printers and computers; assist students with research strategies.
Assist Summer Program Staff and Participants where needed.
Work within Library guidelines to arrive at solutions for problems, obtain final review by Library Director for operational problems falling outside those guidelines.
Maintain the circulation database; assist with tracking overdue materials, mailing overdue notices, collection of overdue materials; package of interlibrary loan materials for mailing; cull materials to be repaired; manage the circulation of technical accessories (e.
g.
disk drives, headphones, Ethernet cables, etc.
) Assist with the booking of library facilities; ensure booked rooms are prepared and have necessary supplies and equipment; monitor non-circulating and periodical collections to ensure they are not damaged or removed from the library without authorization; perform periodic shelf readings of the collection to ensure accuracy of the catalog; monitor the use of computers, copiers and printers so supplies are not being wasted, and the equipment is functional; notify responsible party if equipment is in need of repair; notify Housekeeping and Maintenance departments when their services are required; ensure that library rules and policies are followed; order and receive library office supplies.
Prepare library materials and perform conservation duties:
type inventories of donated and/or new items; apply call number tags, identification stamp and book charge pockets; apply donor bookplates; type lists of shelved new materials; perform basic repairs of library materials; stamp and post magazines and newspapers to subscription tracking notebook; shelve magazines and newspapers Under the direction of the Library Director may delegate jobs to student volunteers or student community service workers; lead Library Assistants I with processing materials for the collection.
Log news critical to library operations in library logbook.
Attend meetings, interact and work closely with:
Academy Deans and Department Chairs.
College Counselor Idyllwild Arts Foundation Associates Staff of various departments (Marketing, Development, Advancement, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Technology); Tutors of Academy Students Summer Program Staff and participants Attend meetings, interact and work closely with:
Various other adjunct groups who periodically use the library and its facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS General knowledge of:
Library practices and procedures; library material basic repair techniques; word processing, spreadsheet and data base programs; organizational skills and time and project management; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; modern office procedures and methods.
Intermediate and efficient knowledge of Word, Excel, and FileMaker Pro desired.
Ability to:
Self-motivate and work independently with little or no supervision; maintain confidential data and information and maintain confidentiality related to the work area; research and write accurate reports, multi-task by handling several jobs, people and assignments at the same time; work in a challenging, demanding and often changing environment with enthusiasm and creativity; ensure deadlines and timelines are adhered to; demonstrate and use sound judgment and organizational skills.
Work a varied schedule which may include evenings and weekends.
Communicate clearly and concisely in writing as well as speech; listen and accurately capture content of meetings and conversations; work cooperatively with other departments and library staff; communicate and interact with people of various nationalities and of diverse foreign backgrounds and cultures as well as with people for whom English is not the primary language.
Perform responsible, confidential secretarial and clerical work; enter data at 60 WPM accurately and proficiently; compile and maintain a variety of records and files in paper and electronic network environment; compile and analyze data, information and numbers; prepare business reports and letters; work within network file structures; use computers and peripheral equipment confidently and proficiently.
Use the principles and procedures of collection management according to the Dewey Decimal system of organization; perform bibliographic search and sorting; repair damaged library materials.
Perform other duties as required and assigned.
Other requirements:
Requires the ability to pass a criminal history background check as required by CA Education Code section 44237, obtain and maintain a valid California Driver License and pass a TB test.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position an incumbent is required to frequently remain sedentary, often sitting for periods of 1 hour or more while processing information and paper work both manually and on a computer.
Reaching with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse is required.
Must be able to climb stairs, endure higher altitude and traverse uneven terrain while moving about campus.
Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, push a book cart with up to a 150 pound load.
Must be able to use a ladder to reach top shelves and stoop to reach bottom shelves.
Must be able to tolerate occasional high levels of dust.
Must be able to tolerate a high level of machine noise, when all the computers, printers and copiers are running.
Must be able to stand fluctuating temperatures.
The incumbent must be able to communicate in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person.
Specific vision abilities include close, distant and color vision perception and the ability to adjust eye focus, and acuity to read 8pt type.
